More women in the trades. More support. More allies. That’s how we build a strong future. This Women’s Month, Shmyla & Suveen Thanri from @ualocal401 are sharing why it’s so important to bring more women into the trades — and why those already here need to lift each other up. Because when we support, mentor and stand together, we all win. To the next generation of tradeswomen: there’s a place for you here. And to our male allies — your support matters more than you know. Let’s keep building, together.

In case nobody told you…📣 You don’t have to go to college/university to land a great job and be successful. You don’t have to spend loads on tuition or go to school for years on end. @welderchick3030

From the moment he picked up a stinger, Lucas knew pipe welding was the path for him. The challenge, precision, and skill required set it apart—and he was determined to master it. Now, as the Welding Coordinator at UA Local 800 in Sault Ste. Marie, he oversees welders and has even started a 456P Pressure Systems Welder trade school to train the next generation. But according to Lucas, success in this trade isn’t just about talent, it’s about putting in the work. “Most of us are working at it. Practice is a huge part of being a pipe welder. You have to get that booth time.” With dedication and hands-on experience, the possibilities in welding are endless.

For over 20 years, Roodney Clarke has been a leader in the trades, advocating for workers, mentoring apprentices, and proving that representation matters. 💬 What it means to lead: “It means a lot to me too, for the membership to choose me to represent them.” From serving on key union committees to leading charity initiatives, Roodney has always believed in lifting others up and his motto “built on respect” proves just that. Because in the trades, success isn’t just about skill, it’s about having each other’s backs. 💡His advice to all members: “It’s all about being involved in the local. It’s something I encourage every member to be.” This Black History Month, we recognize the impact of leaders like Roodney — trailblazers shaping the future of the industry.

The MCAC Student Chapter Summit was an unforgettable experience! 🙌 One of the major highlights? A behind-the-scenes tour of the Niagara Power Generation Plant, the first major power plant on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Students got an up-close look at how water has been harnessed for electricity for over a century through interactive exhibits, a detailed scale model, and a hands-on control panel that simulated plant operations. But the real showstopper was taking a glass elevator 180 feet underground to explore the historic Trailrace Tunnel… a breathtaking feat of engineering that once carried water used to generate power back into the Niagara River. With so many exciting learning opportunities, networking moments, and hands-on activities, the future of mechanical contracting is looking brighter than ever. Also, we can’t forget to shoutout @procoretech for hosting the Brick by Brick LEGO challenge and to everyone who made this event a success! Can’t wait for the next one.

Behind every glass of clean water at your favorite campsite is a team of skilled tradespeople making it happen. The Parks Canada Water Treatment Plant at Lake Superior Provincial Park is a prime example of innovation meeting nature. From underground pipelines to high-tech filtration systems, this project ensures safe, clean water flows to every campsite, fountain, and tap in the park. It's all thanks to precision, expertise, and a commitment to excellence by #RFContracting that makes it all happen. Next time you visit a national park, take a moment to appreciate the water you drink and the skilled trades that make it possible. 🌲🚰

This weekend, we celebrate #NationalFatherDaughterDay, and what better way than to showcase one of our own from @ualocal401 in Kingston: Sam and Mary, a father-daughter duo keeping the family tradition alive in the pipe trades. Sam, a seasoned welder turned instructor, was caught off guard when Mary showed interest in following his path, but he's been her biggest supporter every step of the way. 👏 Now a plumbing apprentice, Mary is eager to expand her skills, with welding next on her list. 🔥 As the third generation in the trades, Mary isn’t just upholding tradition—she’s shaping her own. Whether she’s getting her hands dirty on-site or embracing her feminine side off the clock, she’s showing that the trades aren’t defined by gender. ‘I can do the job just like anyone else,’ she says. Meet Hayley, a skilled steam/pipe fitter at @VollmerInc, a multi-trade contractor based in Windsor, serving Ontario-wide. 👩‍🏭 In her early twenties, Hayley chose not to follow a desk-bound path and enrolled at BCIT, where she explored various piping trades. Now, with experience both in the shop and in the field, she shares, “Hands down, my favourite part is working in the fab shop. I love the pace and the opportunity to work with a skilled welder, fabricating piping systems and building off spool drawings.” Even though she’s just starting her career, Hayley believes choosing this path was “one of the best decisions I have ever made.” Keep at ‘er, Hayley! 🔥

Check this out! 🤔 @FanshaweCollege is overhauling its existing heating and cooling systems into a central Campus Energy Centre. This is a five-year project and @EllisDonCorp and @Modern.Niagara are leading the way, starting with a new chiller centre. After operating off an aging, decentralized system nearing the end of its lifecycle, this new system, complete with specialized pre-insulated pipe, will not only provide a more reliable environment for students to learn in but is a greener solution – reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing capacity, and lowering maintenance and operating costs. Sounds like a win-win to us! This is just the beginning of the work – we will be sure to share updates as this comes to life. Photo credit: @Ellisdoncorp

Meet Adam Carpenter, owner of #RFContracting and a board member of the #MCAO. 👀 Adam’s path to the trades wasn’t exactly the usual route. He started in the corporate world as an accountant and controller for a commercial real estate firm. But when the job posed the possibility of relocating him and his family away from Sault Ste. Marie, he took a leap of faith, taking control of RF Contracting and putting his business smarts to work in his hometown. Adam’s passion for the future of the pipe trades is clear. He’s excited about how the industry is evolving with technology and the growing need for skills like people management. He sees this as an opportunity for more people with diverse backgrounds to find their place and succeed in the trades. He’s also a huge advocate for Sault Ste. Marie, saying, “There’s no better place to stay, live, and play.” If you’re curious about what the Soo has to offer, reach out to UA Local 800, MCA Sault Ste Marie or RF Contraction to learn more.

Today marks National Injury Prevention Day in Canada. We want to take a moment to recognize all the unionized contractors who have committed to ensuring safe working environments for all their workers. We also celebrate the role of instructors at the UA training centres who are teaching safe work practices and preparing tradespeople to work safely and effectively. Pictured here is the IEC Training Centre in Sarnia, which provides Valley-wide safety training for contractors, unions and owner clients. His journey epitomizes the boundless possibilities and transformative potential inherent in the trades—a journey of growth, opportunity, and endless exploration. With every person we meet, it’s inspiring to hear that no paths are the same… Some are very different, but every person is happy to have ended up at the #UA!

It’s not every day a helicopter becomes an essential part of the operation! 🚁 On-site in London, a helicopter was used by MCAO member contractor @cjsexpressltd to help lift 32 MUA heating and cooling units and 2,000 feet of pipe on to the roof of this warehouse. Traditionally a process that takes days with a crane, utilizing a helicopter completes the job in a matter of hours, rain or shine! Once on the roof, pipefitters will pipe all the gas lines to the units and throughout the warehouse. This work is essential to ensuring fresh air is brought into the building from outside. These units are also key to ensuring energy efficiency by managing the temperature of incoming air, reducing interference with existing climate controls. This job exemplifies how mechanical contractors are adapting their practices to work efficiently and safely, all while keeping their work on schedule. ⏰

You might recognize this face, especially if you were on the #WestPark team. 👇 Meet Josh – he’s a 16-year vet and the go-to guy on the West Park Hospital site. Starting his journey as a plumber, Josh found his niche in medical gas systems, thanks to specialized and paid-for training through his #union. Seen here, Josh and his team expertly installed one of the mechanical systems that define the hospital. The systems utilize Zephyr pumps that pump oxygen through 1,200 feet of pipe within the hospital! This crucial system ensures the medical beds have the flow of med gas that they need. It's a complicated job, but that’s why Josh is in med gas - he loves the challenge of the work, and it helps that it's a clean job too! He gives back to the union that taught him, now teaching the program himself so others can continue to deliver on these specialized jobs. 🤝

“A worker is only as good as their tools.” Having the right tools needed to complete the job makes a difference. This threading machine is an essential tool for a pipefitter, here at #WestPark, ensures connecting pipes are secure and well-threaded. Here’s why that matters: 💧Prevent leaks: A well-sealed pipe means no leaks and no leaks means an efficient system. ⏳ Performance: Done well, you can ensure longevity and a system that will stand the day-to-day rigors of use. When the threading is right, the system can operate how it was intended to, ensuring optimal flow of fluids or gases and a high performing system. What are some other Tools of the Trades you can’t live without? 🤔
